Ian Massa-Harris McFeely (né Massa-Harris) is a distinguished character dramatic tenor, acting-through-song specialist, and dedicated educator in the fields of opera and musical theatre. He has received extensive training from prestigious institutions such as Royal Holloway, the Royal College of Music, ENO Works – The Knack, Morley College, and Birkbeck College, University of London. In 2009, Ian transitioned from baritone to tenor under the guidance of Arwel Treharne Morgan, following initial studies with Pamela Bowden, Mary King, and Colin Baldy.
 

As an opera singer, Ian has performed at some of the world’s most prestigious venues, such as the Royal Albert Hall, Royal Festival Hall, London Coliseum, Cadogan Hall, and Opera Holland Park. As a character dramatic tenor, his diverse repertoire features roles such as Spoletta in Tosca, Jaquino in Fidelio,  Il Primo Giudice Giudice in Ballo in maschera, Venditore in I gioielli della Madonna, Nick in La Fanciulla del West, Mime in Wagner's Das Rheingold and Siegfried, the Witch in Hansel and Gretel, and the Sorceress in Dido and Aeneas. He has also portrayed key characters in The Marriage of Figaro, Gianni Schicchi, and La Traviata. Additionally, Ian is an experienced opera chorister, having sung in over 100 different operas, both as a chorus member and in various small and featured roles.

His work with leading opera companies, including English National Opera (ENO), Opera North, Opera Rara, and Opera Holland Park, underscores his stature in the operatic world. As a seasoned concert soloist, Ian has performed oratorio roles in Carmina Burana, Mozart's Coronation Mass and Mass in C Minor, Fauré's Requiem, and Haydn's Creation.
 

Ian has also contributed to new works, creating roles such as the Operatic Tenor in Benjamin Till’s Pepys Motet, featured on BBC Radio 3, and Rev Joshua Grippe in Richard Chew and Rufus Norris's On Thee We Feed at ENO.
 

A respected figure in the musical world, Ian excels as an acting-through-song specialist, vocal tutor, and lecturer. His expertise in the field is further solidified by his recent appointment as Programme Leader for the new MA in Musical Theatre at the University of Chichester Conservatoire, set to launch in 2025—a course expertly written and designed by the acclaimed Meredith Braun. Beyond his stage work, Ian is deeply committed to nurturing the next generation of musical theatre performers. Following a rewarding tenure at Brunel University of London, where he had the privilege of collaborating with the esteemed Sally Goodworth, Ian transitioned to the University of Chichester Conservatoire. There, he plays a key role on the teaching staff, guiding students through various degree programs with his extensive knowledge and experience, and reflecting his ongoing dedication to providing high-quality education in musical theatre.
 

Ian has showcased his talents on stage in a variety of significant roles, including his recent portrayal of Gavin in Charmed The Musical (Radio Musical) written by Kevin Gadz, music by Aaron Robertson, a production inspired by the beloved Charmed TV series. His ability to bring characters to life with depth and authenticity is evident in roles such as Piangi in Phantom of the Opera, Chef Louis in The Little Mermaid, Clopin in The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and Pirelli in Sweeney Todd.

He has performed in numerous prestigious venues across the UK and around the world, in iconic locations such as The Charing Cross Theatre, The Lyric Theatre in London, The Bloomsbury Theatre in London, The Apollo Theatre (Shaftesbury Avenue) in London, The Round House in London, Tower of London, Kensington Roof Gardens in London, and Cafe De Paris in London. Internationally, he has appeared on stages at Il Duomo in Florence, St. Paul’s in Rome, St. Peter’s Square in Vatican City, and Beethoven-House in Bonn, Germany.

In the world of opera, musical theatre, and film, Ian has worked with many esteemed professionals, including directors such as Anneliese Miskimmon, Cecilia Stinton, Christopher McQuarrie, Deborah Warner, John Savournin, John Wilkie, Martin Duncan, Martin Lloyd-Evans, Olivia Fuchs, Rodula Gaitanou, Rufus Norris, Rupert Goold, Simon Callow, Stephen Barlow, and Woody Allen. Among the distinguished conductors he has collaborated with are Brad Cohen, Francesco Cilluffo, Jane Glover, John Andrews, Lada Valešová, Lee Reynolds, Manlio Benzi, Matthew Kofi Waldren, Nicoletta Conti, Peter Robinson, Richard Bonynge, Sir Colin Davis, Sir John Eliot Gardiner, Sir Mark Elder, Sir Simon Rattle, Sonia Santamaria, Stephen Higgins, and Stuart Stratford.
 

Ian's talents also extend to film and television. He performed as the Turandot Chorus Tenor in Mission Impossible 5 and sang in the ensemble for Jonathan Dove’s TV opera Death of a Princess. His recording credits include Le Willis under Sir Mark Elder, Tosca for Philharmonia Britannica, Idomeneo, Fidelio, and Fanciulla Del West for Midsummer Opera, as well as collaborations with pop artists like Candy Rose, Doryan, and Chasing Deer.

Ian is a committed member of several professional organizations, including the British Voice Association, The Association of Teachers of Singing, Musicians' Union, Equity, and BAFTA Connect. His work continues to bridge the worlds of opera and musical theatre, bringing his unique expertise to both genres.
